Hey, it's Julie here,

I hope you are enjoying your week so far! Below is our weekly round-up of what's been happening here at Clever Poppy.

In today's email:

  • Beginner's guide to the French Knot
  • A beautiful personalised version of "Soul Sisters"
  • A kiwi business turning wedding bouquets into art
  • A fun and simple rainy day project for the kids
  • Shop Spotlight: Progress over Perfection
  • In my world: Mud adventures and Scrabble

On the Blog... A Beginner's Guide on how to do a Perfect French Knot

French knots are such a fun bubbly stitch that is used in so many wonderful embroidery patterns! This stitch involves creating cute little knots with your thread that adds so much texture and whimsy to your embroidery creations.

Check out my blog post for a simple tutorial on how you can learn this technique.

What have our makers been up to?

Emily shared in the group her beautiful personalised version of our new pattern 'Soul Sisters'.
She said: "Finished the Soul Sisters pattern and it was so much fun 👯‍♀️ It was so therapeutic playing with the hair although the styling was tricky at times."
👯‍♀️😅 "I changed the hair colours around because my favourite sister was the one with the hat so I wanted her to have the red hair like me! I switched the French braid for a cute half pony because I just couldn't resist how cute it was! Definitely can't wait to keep stitching hair 😊"

What's inspiring me on the creative front...

I came across this awesome kiwi business Wild Weaves and just had to share it with you! How inspiring is it to see the creativity used here by Jessica helping turn treasured wedding bouquets into art? Below is just one of many stunning weaves she has created. You can check out her instagram page here if you want to see more of her work.

Something helpful and fun for a rainy day...

If you are needing an activity to help keep the kids entertained, my printable paper dolls are just the thing! It's a project I created during lockdown 2020, and I still get messages from mums all the time, about how these paper dolls are entertaining their kids for hours on end. You can find an easy tutorial with free printables on my blog post here

Shop Spotlight...Progress over Perfection

This pattern is what we are all about here at Clever Poppy! Progress over Perfection is a pattern to embrace exactly that, and makes such a beautiful gift or reminder for your wall at home. This is a great way to practise your foundation techniques and learn a simple way to add shading with straight stitches. I recommend it for Confident Makers. You can purchase the pattern kit (this includes the printed pattern guide, threads, cotton fabric and hoop) from our Clever Poppy shop. Or you can grab the digital pattern (if you already have your supplies).

In my world...

I've been hanging out with the kids over the school holidays, and we've been embracing some wintery weather! The last week or so has featured bush walks in between rain showers, mud adventures, hot tubs and lots of scrabble. I actually can't believe how much the kids have been enjoying scrabble – we team up if need be, and it seems to have just the right combination of competitiveness and challenge to entertain the kids.

In between all of this, I've been stitching up a storm! My main focus has been a new pattern for my next live embroidery workshop, which features a jar of flowers and some cute bees. Plus an upcoming embroidery pattern of a bouquet of flowers, which I'm thinking will make a really great gift. I'm also about to start stitching up an ampersand (&) to add to the Festive Alphabet pattern – due to popular request!

Ok I better get back to the hustle and bustle of school hols (I'm literally hiding in a bedroom to write this haha)!

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week.

Julie xx.
P.S. I shared a pattern I've been working on just for fun, and it received a flurry of messages in my insta inbox asking me to turn it into a pattern! Here's a peek at what it looks like (it's not finished yet). If I did this as a pattern it would be a different view, probably with a bit more colour. But I'm keen to know – is this style design something you'd like to see as a pattern? Hit reply to let me know!
