Hey Britta,

I hope you are enjoying your week so far. Here's what's new at Clever Poppy this week.

In today's email:

  • On the Blog: A simple tutorial for Split Stitch
  • Maker's levelled up Converse shoes
  • Gorgeous hand stitched heirloom knitwear
  • A helpful guide to start your journey with embroidery onto clothing

On the Blog... Learn the Split Stitch Technique

If you are a beginner with embroidery, then this is one technique you will definitely want to learn and have in your skill set!

It's a great stitch to use for straight or curved lines, or outlines of shapes. It has a nice even, overall effect which is why it is one of my preferred techniques to use for outlines in a lot of our patterns. Or you can even use it as a filler stitch, e.g. to fill in some bold lettering. It creates a nice textured effect.

If you'd like to learn this technique, you can jump over to our blog article here, which has a super simple and straightforward tutorial.

Happy stitching!

What have our Makers been up to?

We were super impressed when we saw these embroidered Converse shoes, shared by our talented member Hannah. What a creative way to level up your accessories and make them extra special!

She said: "Wanted to share these converse I embroidered for my mum's birthday ☺ Got them second hand on Vinted for only £8(!), cleaned them up with some whitening toothpaste and then just went to town! Have to say, I'm pretty pleased with them and my mum cried when I gave them to her, which I hope means she liked them! ๐Ÿ˜‚"

What's inspiring me on the creative front...

There is something so beautiful and unique about embroidery onto knitwear, and I especially love how adorable and cosy children look in it during the winter months! I often get asked about hand stitching onto knitwear, so thought this gorgeous knitted cardigan hand stitched by the team at @Shirleybredal was the perfect inspo to share.

The thing I love about Shirley Bredal is not only are their pieces timeless and beautifully made, but they are made ethically by a small team of women in Nepal. They make hand knitted heirloom pieces for both mama and child, and even make cute mini-pieces for your children's dolls!

You can check out more of their beautiful items of clothing here on their Insta page.

Something helpful...

Did you know we have a whole guide available, dedicated to embroidery onto clothing?

I often get asked about this subject from many people, so  thought this would be helpful to share with you.

Our 'Beginner's Guide to Embroidery onto Clothing' has all of my key learnings, top tips and answers to common questions about stitching onto clothing, all in one handy guide. This will help to get you started on your journey with stitching onto items of clothing, bags, shoes, hats - the options are endless! So if you've always wanted to do this but not sure how, this is the best place to start as a beginner.

You can find this free guide over in our blog article here.

Check out some of our member's beautiful examples below of embroidery onto clothing and accessories!

Shop Highlight... Happy Designs for Clothing

Once you are feeling confident and ready to start stitching onto clothing, you could give our 'Happy Designs for Clothing' pattern a go! It goes hand in hand with our Beginner's Guide featured above.

This pattern includes 12 happy motifs, which each have a step-by-step guide to stitching them onto your clothing or accessories.

I would recommend this for Confident Maker's +, this could be the next challenge you are waiting for!

Our pattern kit includes the printed pattern guide, 2x sheets of Sulky Stabiliser for transferring your pattern, and a thread bundle with all of the colours needed for each design.

In my world...

It's been a bit of a heavy week for us all here in NZ, seeing the terribly tough time our fellow kiwis are going through, in the flood affected areas. But there was a story one of our lovely members Felicity shared with me, that made me smile. Have a read about how this incredible 81-year-old crocheted while her caravan was swept away in floodwaters. She said "It was like, if I was to go, I wanted to be doing something that bought me joy. I love crochet." Good for her - I'm sure many of us would be thankful to stitch away at such a stressful time too!

Here at Clever Poppy HQ, I've spent the past week finalising our Floral Rainbow Sampler pattern. Plus the tutorial for Bullion Knots which will accompany it. It's reminded me how much I love designing patterns and teaching new techniques. And boy did Bullion Knots test my skills. I really can't wait to share these with you on the 1st March!

Have a great rest of your week everyone!

Julie xx.
